How Word Study works

Behind every English word in the Bible stands a Hebrew or Greek original with its own shades of meaning. Look up a word or a Strong's number to see the lemma, its root sense and how it is used from Genesis to Revelation. That helps you notice when one English word covers several originals.

Example verses

Each of these verses turns on a single rich word. Look it up:

  • God is love · 1 John 4:16

And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

  • Slow to anger · Psalms 103:8

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

  • The living word · Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

  • Peace with God · Romans 5:1

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

About Word Study

Type an English word, a transliteration or a Strong's number (such as G26 or H2617) to see the original-language word behind the translation: its lemma, root meaning, range of use and key occurrences in the Old or New Testament.

Definitions come from the public-domain Strong's dictionary bundled with the app, and the AI explanation is checked against those entries and the Bible text. AI can still make mistakes, so use it alongside a lexicon and your own reading.

Try it with: agape (G26) — love · chesed (H2617) — steadfast love · grace in Ephesians 2:8
