Pentecost: Power from on High
Before he ascended, Jesus promised his followers power from on high. Walk through the promise, the waiting and the dramatic day of Pentecost in Acts 1–2, and see how the Spirit formed a praying, generous, joyful church — and still does today.
The days
- Day 1: The Comforter will comeJohn 16:7-14Jesus tells his disciples it is good that he goes away, because he will send the Comforter, who will guide them into all truth and glorify Christ.
- Day 2: You shall receive powerActs 1:4-8The risen Jesus tells his followers to wait for the promise of the Father; the Spirit will give them power to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth.
- Day 3: Waiting in prayerActs 1:12-14After the ascension, the believers — including women and Jesus' family — gather in the upper room and continue with one accord in prayer.
- Day 4: Wind and fireActs 2:1-4On the day of Pentecost the Spirit comes with the sound of a mighty wind and tongues of fire, filling every believer and enabling them to speak.
- Day 5: Your sons and daughtersActs 2:14-21Peter explains that the prophecy of Joel is fulfilled: God pours out his Spirit on all flesh — young and old, men and women — and whoever calls on the Lord will be saved.
- Day 6: Repent and be baptisedActs 2:36-41Cut to the heart, the crowd asks 'What shall we do?'; Peter calls them to repent, be baptised and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, and three thousand respond.
- Day 7: A Spirit-filled communityActs 2:42-47The Spirit forms a community devoted to teaching, fellowship, breaking bread and prayer — generous, joyful and growing.
