Harvest & Thanksgiving
Harvest is a time to thank God for the food, work and provision he gives, and to share with those who have little. Over seven days, learn from Scripture how God's people offered their firstfruits with joy, remembered the poor and the stranger, and gave because Christ first gave himself for them.
The days
- Day 1: You crown the yearPsalms 65:9-13The psalmist praises God who waters the earth, softens the ground with showers and crowns the year with goodness, until the valleys covered with corn shout for joy.
- Day 2: The one who returnedLuke 17:11-19Jesus heals ten lepers, but only one, a Samaritan, turns back to glorify God and give thanks, and Jesus asks, 'Where are the nine?'
- Day 3: A basket of firstfruitsDeuteronomy 26:1-11Israel is to bring the first of the harvest to God, retell how he rescued them from slavery, worship before him, and rejoice together with the Levite and the stranger.
- Day 4: Do not forgetDeuteronomy 8:10-18When the people have eaten and are full, they must bless the Lord and not grow proud or say their own strength gained their wealth, but remember that it is God who gives the power to get it.
- Day 5: Leave the cornersLeviticus 19:9-10God tells his people not to reap the corners of their fields or gather every grape, but to leave them for the poor and the stranger.
- Day 6: Rich toward GodLuke 12:15-21Jesus warns against greed, because life is not measured by possessions, and tells of a rich man who builds bigger barns for himself but is not rich toward God.
- Day 7: He became poor2 Corinthians 8:1-9The Macedonian churches, though in deep poverty, give joyfully and beyond their means, first giving themselves to the Lord, following the grace of Christ who, though rich, became poor for our sakes.
