Grief & Hope
Grief is the cost of love, and the Bible gives us room to lament. These seven days do not rush your sorrow; they sit with you in it and point gently to the God who comforts and to the hope of resurrection in Christ.
The days
- Day 1: Jesus weptJohn 11:32-36Jesus, who knew he would raise Lazarus, still groaned and wept with the grieving; tears are not a lack of faith, and Jesus enters our sorrow with us.
- Day 2: Near to the brokenheartedPsalms 34:15-19The Lord hears the cry of his people and is near to those with a broken heart; the psalm is honest that the righteous face many troubles, yet God does not abandon them.
- Day 3: I am the resurrectionJohn 11:21-27In Martha's honest grief and question, Jesus reveals himself as the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in him, though they die, shall live.
- Day 4: Grieving with hope1 Thessalonians 4:13-18Paul does not tell believers not to grieve, but not to grieve as those without hope, because Jesus died and rose again and will bring his people together with him.
- Day 5: The God of all comfort2 Corinthians 1:3-5God is the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in every trouble so that we can, in time, comfort others with the comfort we have received.
- Day 6: New every morningLamentations 3:19-26In the middle of deep lament, the writer remembers that the Lord's mercies do not fail and are new every morning; it is good to hope and wait quietly for him.
- Day 7: All things newRevelation 21:1-5John's vision of the new heaven and new earth promises that God will dwell with his people and wipe away every tear; death, sorrow and pain will be no more.
